I’m seriously tired of the message ‘technology has made us all zombies and we don’t talk to each other anymore’. Yes, there are serious problems. Yes, there is a large amount of room for improvement.

But you know what I did before technology? You know what I did before I had a phone?

Nothing. When I was in school I brought novels with me every day and I read them. I didn’t talk. I managed to make a few friends and only had fun with them because they forced me to do things that I hated. I don’t like parties and clubs and other stuff, every single bit of that was hell for me, because I like quiet and suck at conversation and places like that were nothing but balls of stress to me.

If not for technology, I would still be a miserable pile of constant anxiety, afraid to break out of a routine for fear I’d do/say something wrong and stupid. I never talked or socialized and when I did muster up the nerve to speak it was always awkward or too blunt. I became known as a cold-hearted bitch who was mean to everyone, even though what I mostly did was go home and cry and call myself stupid.

Computers changed all of that for me, showed me for the first time that there were people like me. The better tech got, the more I opened up. But I still was pretty alone when not around people I knew, because I’m not a talker, not really.

Chatting online - chat rooms, emails, lj comms, fanfiction, all of that taught me how to be social. All of that helped me be braver, made me more willing to talk to people anywhere, everywhere. It’s less overwhelming to me now to have to go into a strange room and talk to people. I don’t go deer in the headlights now when someone randomly starts talking to me.

My phone also helps when I’m being harassed. Back when I didn’t have a phone, if the nutjobs on the bus or in the airport started harassing me, I had no choice but to endure it until it was over or try to say something or just leave and risk whatever the fuck happened next. Now? I always have my phone. I can always call and say ‘talk to me so this person leaves me alone’. I can text someone to come rescue me at the bar. I can fucking call for help at the drop of a dime if I have to. Airports are no longer a terrifying place where I will be stuck for hours with no one to talk to unless I want to risk an uncomfortable, even dangerous, situation.

Technology made me more aware of the problems and challenges that other people face. It showed me a broader world. It’s made me more patient with people, it’s made me more determined to remember that you never know what someone is going through.

If not for technology, I never would have been brave enough to try writing. I doubt I’d be an author right now. I certainly never would have met this crazy chick who was living in Vermont and was just as miserable as me. I never would have emailed her every morning and night and texted all through work and wound up with my best friend and current roommate slash business partner.

So don’t fucking tell me that technology is turning us into zombies that don’t communicate.

And people don’t just enjoy each other? that’s such bullshit. I was at a concert just a couple days ago. The radio was playing while they waited for the show to start, and Gangnam Style came on. The entire fucking building exploded with people dancing and cheering and laughing and having a good time together for no reason more than we were all amused as fuck that song came on the radio.

I see that kind of thing happen all the time. We’ll randomly be talking about something on someone’s phone at a restaurant and the waiter will chip in because he recognizes it. I’ve shot the shit with so many people over something that was happening on someone’s phone. People I may not have talked to otherwise.

Technology is quite literally one of the main reasons I live a brighter, louder, happier life than I would have otherwise. Like goddamn hell am I a zombie.

Benny’s story was a tragedy and I loved it. There is nothing wrong with it, even if you didn’t enjoy it. The purpose of the death was for Benny to see that he himself is really no different, and he literally agrees with that realization and allows dean to KILL HIM

The fact that the series centers on the father as being the ‘higher power’ in which the (mainly male) characters must break away from in order to attain their own individuality while heavily constraining mothers to an extremely idealized and romanticized view of motherhood is pretty sexist in itself! It has everything to do with male privilege, because it identifies men and their stories as more important than women and their stories! The fact that men (and their fathers) are viewed as individual characters with their own stories to tell, while women are constantly limited in roles in which they only exist to help tell those stories IS MALE PRIVILEGE. Are you fucking serious, are you saying that Missouri wouldn’t have been a ‘good choice’ because she was a (black) woman? Congratulations, you just proved OP’s fucking point, you sexist prick. Missouri’s potential relationship with Sam and Dean, and her potential to become a huge part of their lives would have been every bit as valid as Bobby’s relationship and role holy fucking shit.

Sex matters here because this is about the third or fourth time in which a female character gets written out because of “fan reaction” (though I’m pretty sure the writers’ internalized misogyny played just as big of a role). Sex matters here because Anna was probably one of few women characters who was handed a story arc that she could call her own, one of the few times in which the love interest was not completely limited by her role of ‘the love interest’, and to be honest, one of the few times we were seeing a female character starting to complete her own version of the “hero’s journey”. Here’s the deal- the fact that she, one of the strongest female characters they had to date, not only had her storyline given over to a male ~fan favorite~ but also experienced probably one of the most horrible character deconstruction and vilification I’ve ever seen in under ONE episode (not to mention the shitty death) speaks volumes about how the series treats their women. They’re not useful anymore, we don’t know what to do with them anymore, let’s kill them off! Anna’s death was unnecessary. Anna’s existence being continually erased from the show is unnecessary. It wasn’t even like Missouri or Ruby 1.0, where the actress was either unavailable or above their budget, because how many times has Julie expressed her desire to come back? Countless. They completely destroyed her character for nothing. Except for maybe making sure that they completely erase her legacy and retcon her relationship with the Winchesters in order that it fits with Cas instead. (Aside: Cas getting Anna’s original storyline didn’t mean she had to die, there are probably a billion ways the show could have incorporated her back in [ie making her completely human again, making her a depowered angel on the run, exploring the sibling dynamic between her and Castiel, etc.]. There’s simply no excuse with how shitty her character and legacy is treated both in the show and in fandom)

DING DONG U ARE WRONG~~ Ellen got a rather positive reception from fans, but Jo was received rather negatively in contrast, can anyone tell me why? Oh yes that’s right! Because she was the ~bad love interest~. In fact, part of the apparent reason Jo was written out was because of fan reaction (and also because Kripke hated the Roadhouse for some strange reason, which he actually admits to in the s2 DVD). Though you are right, both Ellen and Jo were unable to return partly due to the Strike, the fact that both characters were going to be ignored for the majority of s3, and that the writers replaced the Roadhouse’s function with Bobby is kind of questionable, don’t you think? Like Ellen herself played a pivotal role in Azazel’s death, you’d think she would show up in the s3 premiere? Or at least be mentioned? The Roadhouse was supposed to serve as a homebase for the boys, and the Harvelles were supposed to be a sort of surrogate family alongside of Bobby, meaning both the Harvelles and Bobby could have coexisted quite well in the SPN universe. But instead, Harvelles were written out because fans didn’t like one half of them and because Kripke apparently didn’t like the boys having a homebase (which they actually made Bobby’s house into the very next season wow). So the Harvelles were effectively erased from Supernatural, as all female characters are when they lose their ‘usefulness’. But then they come back in season 5 for two episodes. One to reintroduce them to the show, the other to provide canon fodder for Sam and Dean’s manpain. This isn’t to say they didn’t get great deaths- this is to say they got premature deaths, and ones that were there to primarily move along the Winchesters’ stories. And hey! Cas and Bobby both died too, but why is it that they got to come back, and the Harvelles stayed dead hmm? Why is it that whenever they bring a character back from the dead, or let them finish a story arc, it’s always a white man? Because the narrative provides white males with that kind of privilege that’s why :))))

Do you know who else were supposed to be the ‘good guys’ in her life? Her parents. Do you know who else Bela trusted in order to get away from a horrible situation? The crossroad demon. Bela had absolutely no reason to trust a couple of men who killed things for a living and whom she barely knew. And you’re right, she didn’t trust others, and you’re right, she was a deceitful person. Guess who also are deceitful people who don’t trust others? The Winchesters!!!! But they, at the very least, had each other to rely on. Bela had no one. Also!! The fact that her character death was basically used primarily to raise the stakes for Dean’s upcoming descent to hell is actually kind of a shitty use for a character! Why is it that Dean was given a second chance and Bela wasn’t? Is it possibly because the writers decided her character had fulfilled her ‘usefulness’ for a male character’s story? Probably!

Hey bro, I loved Benny, and I loved the majority of his story arc, but his story in Blood Brothers effectively fridged Andrea twice. First as an idealized past lover and the center of his revenge (wow very original writers! /sarcasm), and once she proved to be a flawed person with her own struggles, she was killed off for his manpain as well. “The purpose of the death was for Benny to see that he himself is really no different” yeah that’s sort of the problem??? That Andrea’s death was there to ultimately serve as a way to further Benny’s character development? That he effectively vilified her for experiencing the same sort of struggle that he was? You’re right, Eve was probably one of the best villains introduced. She was also probably the most wasted potential I’ve ever seen, like she’s supposed to be the Mother of All, goddess of monsters, and she died within two or three appearances. So far you’re just proving all of OP’s points.

“Raphael was always painted as a one-sided villain”, actually he was shown to be a bit more ambiguous in his s5 appearance, but in s6 he was portrayed as the ‘bad black man’. The fact that he is only one of less than a dozen recurring POC characters the show has ever had and is in fact part of SPN’s tradition of making a good half of those POC characters ‘bad guys’ just points out SPN’s problematic handling of race, thanks for pointing that out!

After the whole “God is sexist, but fair” comment in the finale (and lol God never actually means God in SPN, it almost always refers to TPTB, that’s been a recurring tradition since s4), I don’t think that’s so farfetched of an idea. Though on the offhand that they don’t, I will say that they do suffer from some pretty horrid internalized misogyny. Doesn’t really help that almost all the writers on the show are white men!

Read through for the details as the watchdog group breaks down the numbers for each network. We learn, for instance, that “Out of 1,677 total guests, CNN had the largest proportion of men — 76 percent — during the month of April;” and “Fox News had the largest proportion of white guests — 83 percent.”

How can someone stand behind abortion, when you have a life inside of you that God created for you? How can you say that this life isn’t worth it? If you can’t take care of the baby for whatever circumstances than there is always adoption available to couples who can’t conceive, but still want the joy of being parents. OPEN YOUR EYES! God has bigger plans for us all that we don’t even realize the picture.

Hi, OP! As someone who was given up for adoption, allow me to call bullshit on your little post there! You see, when I was adopted, I was a white-skinned, healthy, neurotypical infant, which basically put me at the top of the list, right underneath white-skinned, healthy, neurotypical MALE infants! There’s only one kind of infant people wanted to adopt more than me! I was SOOO lucky! But if you actually bothered to look at the information readily available on the interwebs, you would be aware that the majority of people who are forced to rely on abortion for family planning are poor people and people of color. Of course, those two demographics intersect, thanks to the institutionalized racism of our society! Neat huh?!

Of course, even babies of color are not in high demand with couples looking to adopt. Many who do want to adopt outside their race choose to go outside the country, where laws are less strict and the process is often less expensive. Of course, most of the infants adopted this way are obtained in unscrupulous fashion, but who cares about that when you’re saving a little Korean or African baby from the horrible fate of growing up in Korea or Africa??? And all those children who have birth defects, are born with diseases or disabilities, or have other issues… WELL. Who wants to invest that kind of expense and time? Why would you adopt someone broken, LOLOL?!

Granted, there are some wonderful people who understand the system a little better, and make it a point to try and give POC and disabled children a good home. But they make up a very small fraction of potential adopters! This difference in supply and demand leaves a lot of children stuck in the foster system, where their chances of being adopted diminish with every passing year, and their chances of being physically or sexually abused INCREASE! Isn’t that wonderful?

And of course, we haven’t even talked about the person who is giving birth to the baby! I know you probably think pregnancy is a wonderful, happy time, and for some people it is, but it is also one of the greatest health risks a person can take. I love my son very much, and from the day I found out I was pregnant with him, I wanted him! But I also nearly died giving birth to him. You see, I had pre-eclampsia, the most commonly fatal birth complication in the world. My blood pressure was 180 over 130! At twenty-two years old, I was actually headed for a stroke, hah hah! How funny is that? And all it took was missing a single pre-natal appointment during which my blood pressure rose to dangerous levels and my body tried to kill both me and my son. Those seizures sure were fun, as was the emergency c-section performed without anesthetic! And being chained down while the operation was performed, because I was delirious and wouldn’t stop trying to fight off the doctors, that was a BLAST! It was great for my husband too, since he almost lost his wife and child in just forty-five minutes. You can imagine how thrilled he is at the prospect of me ever getting pregnant again. Babies are certainly cute, but pregnancy can have massive health complications, and I know it’s such a bummer, but they are PERMANENT. :( My abdominal muscles never recovered from being hacked through with a scalpel, and the flood of hormones caused by late pregnancy have changed things from heartburn (never used to have it, now, all the time!) to my emotional reactions (I cry when I see pictures of kittens now. I used to be tough). These are changes I did not ask for, cannot control, and cannot fix! And many people go through worse! I know, right? Unbelievable, but go look up the word ‘episiotomy’ and then look up ‘birth rape’ and I’m afraid you’ll find some stuff that just isn’t very shiny. Plus, the studies actually show that people who carry a baby to term, give birth, then give it up for adoption suffer HIGHER rates of post-pregnancy complications like post-partum depression and post-partum psychosis, general depression, and other mental health issues. Adoption actually isn’t good for the person giving birth at all!

I’m afraid the picture you chose to use there is also pretty disingenuous. I know, I know, it seems like nitpicking. I’m not trying to be mean! :( But that picture shows a fully developed, viable infant, and most abortions are performed when the fetus isn’t even a fetus - it’s a blastocyst. That’s just a clump of cells. Seriously! You can totally find pictures on the interwebs and they’re not even gross, LOLOL! Later-term abortions are usually performed because of health complications, though some of our intrepid state legislators are trying to change all that! They care so much about people who are pregnant, you see, that they want to force them to carry dead or dying fetuses inside them until their body either becomes infected while it rots in their tummies (this is called sepsis, and it makes people very sick, and can even kill them!), or forces it out naturally in a gush of blood and fluids! Isn’t that so caring of them? I’m so glad they’re around to make those decisions for me! And if a pregnant person is not allowed to terminate an unviable fetus, in some states, they have to carry the child to term, give birth to it, and then watch it die in their arms because its lungs weren’t developed, or its brain formed outside its skull, or any of a million possible birth defects that will kill you just as quick as lickity-split! Isn’t that wild?! Of course, these people go through terrible grief, and as I mentioned, some of them may get sick and die from not being able to abort dead or dying fetuses. But I guess that’s just A-okay with you, huh?

Basically, I think before you suggest adoption as a universal alternative, you should actually go do some research on adoption. And before you condemn abortion, you should do some research on abortions - not the stuff your church is giving you, the stuff the real doctors are saying. Go to Planned Parenthood (if they haven’t all been closed down, ROFLMAO!) and request whatever information they have on the process, the statistics of who has abortions and why… and actually, all of that is on the interwebs! Isn’t technology AMAZING?

And in closing, since I’ve been asked this question many times and I know it’s coming? Yes, I realize I am here talking to you because I was not aborted. But the thing is, if my mother had chosen abortion, I wouldn’t know the difference, so it wouldn’t matter to me. And if she decided that choice was best for her, then that choice would have been best for her, and I would never want to take that choice away from her. As it is, since I was given up for adoption, and since I have seen the statistics on how badly people who give their children up for adoption suffer, I have spent much of my adult life worrying about her, whether she’s healthy, whether she’s okay, and feeling that if she did suffer from any of the common post-birth symptoms, it is at least partially my fault, even though she made that decision on her own. Which is silly, I know, but at some point, all children have to stare down the consequences of their parents’ having them. For some, that’s poverty. For others, a life-time of their parents struggling to treat and care for a severe illness or disability. For others, it’s wondering if their mother ever got over giving them away, and wishing you could reach out and assure her that it’s okay, she doesn’t have to be haunted.
